I had an annual sump pump inspection and service and I mentioned this at installation and each year since when the technician is here to do the inspection. What the sump pump system is lacking is the ability to send out a text message (best) or email (acceptable) when either the battery back up is in use or the high water alarm sounds. When we are traveling having an audible alarm is useless -- it may sound for several days until our neighbour drops by to check on the house. I bought a Honeywell unit from Home Depot for $50 (it monitors temperature, humidity and most importantly leak detection) that does this but the sump has to overflow out of the sump for it to send out the leak message, which is better than nothing but on overflow is really too late. Of course available wifi would be a necessary requirement but even my 89 year old mother has wifi and wifi isn't getting any less common. For an otherwise first class sump pump system this is a glaring omission that should be able to be easily rectified (even if it's an extra cost option) and the technology exists. I know I'd pay to have it.
